Reasonable design of glass dome to prevent high temperature of building

In hot weather, the railway station building adopts glass dome design, and the sunlight directly shines into the waiting hall, resulting in a stuffy internal environment, making it difficult for the central air conditioner to work, and the passenger experience is not good. Not only this railway station, but also public buildings such as railway station waiting halls, large shopping malls, hotel lobbies, etc. in many places have adopted glass dome design on a large scale, which leads to a significant increase in the temperature inside the building in hot weather.

So, what is the glass dome design? Why does it make the building hot? How to reasonably cool the building?

① Difficult to balance indoor lighting and heating

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of building materials and technology, more and more public buildings have used large-area glass domes.

The popularity of glass domes in recent years is mainly due to their good lighting effect, which meets the lighting needs of large public buildings.

In architectural design, glass domes are also called lighting ceilings, and good lighting effect is its most prominent advantage.

Public buildings usually have a large depth, and it is difficult to light the central part. A large number of lighting equipment are needed to meet basic lighting needs, and glass domes effectively solve this problem. It introduces natural light into large public buildings. At the same time, the use of glass domes can reduce the lighting needs of indoor environments during the day, thereby saving energy. However, in extremely hot weather, the glass dome design causes a significant increase in temperature inside the building.

 ② Adding coatings or sunshades can make up for shortcomings

With the continuous advancement of building technology, the shortcomings of glass domes are slowly being made up. Reasonable control of the area of daylighting glass and light transmittance is the key to cooling the glass dome. Designers should reasonably control the area of the glass dome, carefully design the daylighting position, and reasonably control the light transmittance of the glass itself. 

For glass domes that have been installed, adding coatings or installing movable sunshades may be a better choice.

1. Apply a blue coating to the glass dome of the waiting hall. 

This new nanomaterial can block ultraviolet rays, infrared rays, and some visible light, play a heat-insulating role, and reduce the internal ground temperature by about 8 degrees Celsius at most.

 2. You can also install movable sunshades on the outside of the glass dome. 

When the sunlight is particularly strong, close the sunshades and use internal lighting; when the sunlight is weak, open the sunshades to allow natural lighting.

Scientifically and rationally analyze the functional requirements of the building, comprehensively consider factors such as lighting, illumination, and ventilation, and widely adopt advanced technologies on this basis. For example, glass with intelligently adjustable light transmittance and light-transmitting but heat-impermeable glass can be used.
